Education System
New Zealand has an impressive higher education system. The country hosts eight universities in total, all of which are included in the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings 2018. In addition to these universities, there are 18 technology and polytechnic institutes. Education System
1. Universities in New Zealand:
There are eight state-funded universities in New Zealand, all of them internationally respected for their academic and research performance. Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral degrees are offered by all New Zealand universities.
2. Polytechnics
New Zealand Qualifications Authority enables the private tertiary sector to award degrees, private degree providers have to provide a quality service to their students and a range of skills of value in the work environment.
3. Private Training Providers (PTEs):
Private training establishments are courses approved by NZQA, Institutions provide a range of courses including English language, aviation flight training, air traffic control, english, business computing, dance, design and arts, religious studies, travel and tourism and training for the hospitality industry.
Entry Criteria
To be eligible to study in New Zealand student”s course must meet the New Zealand requirements for international students. Universities prefer applicants with very good academic background. Postgraduate and Masters Programs may vary between Faculties, students may also be required to provide evidence of relevant work/research experience for management program.
For Diploma Level 5 or Level 6 – student needs to completed 12th standard of education from home country.
For Bachelors Level 7 – student needs to completed 12th standard of education from home country.
For Graduate Diploma – student needs to completed 3yrs bachelor degree from home country.
For Post Graduate Diploma – student needs to completed 3yrs bachelor degree from home country.
For Masters – student needs to be completed 3yrs bachelor degree from home country.
Visa Process
If a student is planning to study full time for more than three months, the applicant needs a student visa, students can only get a student visa to study in a course at an education institution, which is registered and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Each student visa and student permit will specify the course of study, the school or institution and its specific location. Student visa will be issued for the span of time till course tuition fees have been paid. If students are studying a long-term course at a secondary school, University or Polytechnic they will normally pay tuition fees every year. Visa application should be lodged for at least 2 months proceeding to the course commencement date.
As soon as a student receives admission, students need to undertake a medical examination by one of the doctors approved by the New Zealand Government and at the same time they need to arrange for aPolice Clearance Certificate. Along with complete (and signed) application form, Visa fee, Cover letter, Statement of Purpose, Guarantee of Accommodation, Affidavit of Support from Sponsors, Authorization Letter from Sponsors, Educational Certificates and Marksheets, IELTS score, Work Experience, Evidence of Funds and Income. Lodge a student Visa at the High Commission. After lodgment of visa applications, and as soon as “Approval in Principal” of visa from the New Zealand Government is received , students have to pay 1st year’s tuition fees. Upon receiving the fee the High commission will stamp the Visa.
Test Required
Students need a sufficient level of English language proficiency and must meet minimum academic requirements to study in Australia. when applying for a student visa. Australian education institutions can only accept students with an appropriate level of English proficiency. Institutions set their own English language requirements and may have different IELTS entry levels for the proposed level of course than those required for a student visa.
Accommodation
There are several options for student accommodation in New Zealand.
Halls of Residence are generally located a short walk from campus. They fully furnished single or twin-share rooms with a shared dining hall, lounge and laundry.
Homestay/Private Board means live with a New Zealand family in their home with fully furnished room. A homestay is a great way to get to know some friendly New Zealanders and get a close-up look at New Zealand’s way of life and culture.
Flatting/Independent Accommodation Is renting an apartment or house (flat). Flats range from one-bedroom apartments to four or five bedroom homes, and can be found just about anywhere. Flat mates will share the cost of rent and usually the phone and energy bills.

All students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations i.e. 40 hours. Many New Zealand institutions offer a student employment service called & Student Job Search& to help find work. An average amount of 6 to 8 NZD per hour students can earn during part time jobs.
